Released on April 29, 2008 "Grand Theft Auto IV" smashed all existing records for an entertainment release, racking up $310 million in gross sales on 3.6 million units in its first 24 hours. The video game from Take-Two's Rockstar studio, may generate sales of more than $1 billion by the end of 2008.
The Guinness Book of World Records said, "The record establishes GTA IV as the most profitable entertainment release of all-time, far surpassing other video game, film and book releases." First-week sales were $500 million, also a record, Take-Two said on May 7. Through May, 11 million copies of the game had been shipped to stores and consumers purchased 8.5 million.
