Say it isn’t so. Have the French actually arrived at a point where they can be offended by an image of one of the
country’s great icons smoking? This week French authorities were in an uproar over the display of the movie poster
for upcoming release of “Coco Avant Chanel”. The image in the poster shows actress Audrey Tautou holding a
cigarette (think “Gilda”). Metrobus the French advertising company that is responsible for all the Paris bus and
train advertising has banned the movie poster. The movie poster was banned in order to satisfy new legislation
that strictly prohibits the depiction of smoking in any kind of advertising. To mollify the powers that be they
are now displaying a non-smoking version instead.
Mon Dieu! What is this world coming to?
