In what turned into a dismal box office long weekend, "Tropic Thunder" held onto first place for the third weekend in a row, one of only six R-rated movies since 2000 to do so. The other movies to hold that distinction in the last eight years were "The Whole Nine Yards" (2000), "Hannibal" (2001), "American Pie 2" (2001), "Black Hawk Down" (2001) and "The Passion of the Christ" (2004).
Fox's "Babylon A.D." starring Vin Diesel captured second place with a softer than expected $9.6 million. In what has been a disappointing summer for Fox, they released more movies this summer than any of the big 6 studios, but finished last in summer box office derby with about $250M.
Given the softness of the new releases, "The Dark Knight" was able to inch back into third spot, and has now surpassed the $500 million mark in box office receipts. The only other new releases to make the top ten were the political thriller "Traitor," starring Don Cheadle coming in fifth place with $7.8 million, and the spoof comedy "Disaster Movie" which logged $5.8 million in seventh place.
"Mama Mia!" continued it's winning ways with $4.4 million, as it became the third biggest grossing musical, while barely registering on the radar was the new release "College" from MGM in 15th place with $2.1 million, and the expanded release of "Hamlet 2" in 17th place with $1.7 million.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
