Holding off a new contender last weekend, "The Dark Knight" nudged Brendan Fraser and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" for the top box office spot, and set another record as the fastest movie to make $350 million - a feat it accomplished in just 14 days. Industry watchers think that "The Dark Knight" will ultimately become the second highest grossing movie ever, with the top spot being held by James Cameron's "Titanic", which was the number one movie for 15 consecutive weekends back in 1997.
"The Mummy Returns" opened a bit lower than expected, failing to match the first two movies in the franchise - "The Mummy" with $43.4 million in 1999, and "The Mummy Returns" with $68 million in 2001. However, the action adventure was a big hit internationally with the addition of co-stars Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, racking up $59.5 million from 28 territories.
Meanwhile, Kevin Costner got smoked with his self financed and produced political comedy, "Swing Vote", as movie-goers voted with just $6.2 million in ticket sales. Costner has not had a $100 million dollar movie since 1992 with "The Bodyguard."
