The kitten loving hell spawn snatched the number one spot at the box office over the weekend, as "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" pulled an estimated $35.9 million, a significant bump over the first "Hellboy" which opened in 2004 with $23.1 million. The successful opening can be attributed to the following which built up since the original's release on DVD, and the recent recognition of Academy Award-nominated director Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth").
In second place, "Hancock", the Will Smith superhero comedy, remained strong with $33 million, lifting its total to $165 million in 12 days.
Marketed to families by Warner Brothers like a thrill ride, "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D" in third place pulled in a decent $20.6 million, unlike the other new release, Eddie Murphy's sci-fi comedy, "Meet Dave" which crashed with just $7.1 million in ticket sales.
Remaining in the top ten was "Kung Fu Panda", which is now the first non-Shrek feature from DreamWorks Animation to cross the $200 million mark.
