The women from Manhattan ruled the weekend,
astounding industry analysts, as "Sex and the
City: The Movie" pulled in an amazing $56.8 million, besting the previous record for a TV adaptation, which was "Mission Impossible" back in 1996. Sarah Jessica Parker and company also racked up records
as the highest debut in history for a film with a true female lead, and the fifth-highest opening ever for an R-rated movie. Female moviegoers
turned the premiere into a weekend event, and the audience demographics reflected it, with a 75% skew towards the more adventurous gender.
Dropping into second place with a mere $44.7 million was Harrison Ford and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".
Another big surprise, and exceeding expectations this weekend was Liv Tyler's "The Strangers", a R-rated horror thriller that clocked in with almost $21 million. The top five was rounded out by the previously-released Iron Man with 13.5 million, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian with 12.7 million. With the strong box office results, ticket sale were up 28% over the same weekend last year.
