"Iron Man" soared into the top box office spot this past weekend, as fledgling production company Marvel Studios scored almost $100 million over three days. The comic book action/adventure, starring Robert Downey Jr. had the second-highest grossing opening weekend ever for a non-sequel behind "Spider-Man" and the tenth highest overall. Previous to Iron Man, all the other Marvel comic book adaptations were produced by other studios.
The only other new wide release last weekend was "Made of Honor" starring Michelle Monaghan and Patrick Dempsey in a romantic comedy, which was clearly released at this time to give female audiences an alternative to Iron Man. It managed second place with a decent return of almost $15 million.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1. Iron Man - $98.6 M
2. Made of Honor - $14.8 M
3. Baby Mama - $10.1 M
4. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - $6.1 M
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall - $6.1 M
6. The Forbidden Kingdom - $4.2 M
7. Nim's Island - $2.7 M
8. Prom Night - $2.4 M
