Opening in Theaters this Weekend: May 30 - June 1, 2008

This week's new movie releases:

It's girl weekend out, as Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda continue their adventures in the big screen version of "Sex and the City". Sarah+Jessica+Parker, Kim Catrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin+Davis all return as the band of Manhattan gal-pals. Look for some good box office returns, as industry trackers report an amazing number of female movie-goers (as opposed to male) are set to catch the flick.

Also opening in wide release is the horror thriller, "The Strangers" starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple terrorized by three masked psychos who invade their remote vacation home.

Opening in limited release is "The Foot Fist Way", a comedy from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's new Gary Sanchez Productions.

Movie Box Office: May 23 - May 25, 2008

After a slow start on Thursday, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" raided the box office for what turned into gold, pulling in $101 million for the weekend, and over $126 million for the four day opening. Senior citizen Harrison Ford reprised his role as the treasure hunting archeologist, after a nearly two decade hiatus for the Steven Spielberg franchise. The families were out in full force for the long weekend, and helped drive the action adventure to what is the second biggest Memorial Day movie opening ever, behind last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."

Getting rolled over, was last week's number one movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" which dropped almost 60% at the box office, pulling in just over $23 million. Meanwhile, "Iron Man" stayed solid in third place with $20 million, which was a drop of just 37% from the previous week. Iron Man has now soared past $250 million in total ticket sales. In fifth place, "Speed Racer" continued to run out of gas as it managed just under $4 million.

Opening in Theaters this Weekend: May 23 - May 25, 2008

This Memorial Day weekend there is only one new release, and it's a whopper as Harrison Ford returns in the role of the famed archaeologist, in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." Back on the big screen after 19 years, the new action adventure from director Steven Spielberg is showing on a whopping 9,500 screens this weekend. The early returns are in for Thursday evening, and it looks like Indy played a little softer than expected, pulling in an estimated $25 million last night, which is well off the $50 million Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith pulled in on Thursday, May 19, 2005. It looks like the demographics for the Thursday showing showed a majority over the over 35 crowd, which looks like the movie will play out as a family pic, as a whole new generation is introduced to the franchise.

Twilight Movie Posters

"Twilight" is the hot new movie based on the first book and New York Times bestseller in the popular series by author Stephenie Meyer. The liner notes for the book say it is deeply seductive and extraordinarily suspenseful - a love story with bite.

Opening on December 12, 2008 from Summit Entertainment, it stars Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, a girl who after her mother remarries, is sent to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington. There she meets the mysterious and dazzling Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. "Twilight" is an action-packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a human.

Movie Box Office: May 16 - May 18, 2008

Opening lower than the first of the series did back in 2005, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" managed just over $55 million at the box office for first place. Industry observers had projected a possible take in the $70 to $75 million range, but with the second in the series marketed as just another adventure with no strong villain or new high stakes, moviegoers weren't a quick on the uptake.

In second place, "Iron Man" held strong in it's third weekend, pulling another $31.8 million. With a box office receipts of $223.1 million in 17 days, it will soon surpass X-Men: The Last Stand's total. Meanwhile, "Speed Racer" continued its decline, falling into fourth place behind the romantic comedy, "What Happens in Vegas".

It was one of the softer Mid-May weekends in the past ten years, but with the release of the highly anticipated "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" this week, studios exec's are hoping for a ramp up of ticket sales.

There is only one new movie opening in wide release this weekend, and "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" looks like it's set to take the box office crown, with projected earnings of over $70 million.  The first movie of the series based on C.S. Lewis's Narnia Chronicle books, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" made $65 million in it's opening weekend back in December of 2005, and the franchise has only gained in popularity since that time. Produced by Walden Media, which is funded by Christian billionaire Philip Anschutz, the success of this family friendly series will surely mean we will see perhaps five more films after this.

Movie Box Office: May 9 - May 11, 2008

Firing on all jets, "Iron Man" continued it's box office dominance as it racked up another $50 million at the box office this past weekend. Newcomer "Speed Racer" from the creators of the "The Matrix" franchise failed to ignite, as it was roundly panned by critics, but still managed a second place finish. With a budget of $120 million, observers say it may have difficulty recouping it costs.

Adding to the five comedies in the box office top ten, the romantic comedy "What Happens in Vegas" starring Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz pulled into third place with just over $20 miilion, which Chris Aronson, senior vice president at 20th Century Fox said was "a great result".

Meanwhile, the action fight flick "Redbelt" expanded it's release and managed to show up in tenth place on the chart.

Go, go Speed Racer! The classic cartoon series comes to life and gets a big-screen adaptation from the Wachowski Brothers ("The Matrix"). Emile Hirsch is the fearless driver Speed who with his Mach 5 races for the finish line while battling the bad guys. Christina Ricci is girlfriend Trixie and Matthew Fox is the mysterious Racer X, Speed's one time rival. John Goodman is Pops Racer, the designer of the thundering Mach 5.

Also opening in wide release is the romantic comedy, "What Happens in Vegas", starring  Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. For charismatic party guy Jack Fuller (Ashton Kutcher) and buttoned-up commodities trader Joy McNally (Cameron Diaz), a rowdy weekend coincidentally shared in Las Vegas should have, by all rights, ended up being little more than a random blur. That is, if these two vacationing New Yorkers didn't have a signed marriage license staring them in the face to shockingly remind them of the giant misstep they took while feeling no pain, Vegas-style.
