Hayden Christensen teleported into the number one box office spot this past weekend, as "Jumper" topped the charts with over $33 million. Although it's opening wasn't as strong as past President's Day contenders like "Ghost Rider" and "Daredevil", the sci-fi action thriller from director Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity", "Mr. and Mrs. Smith") proved a popular choice with the under 25 crowd.
"Step Up 2 the Streets" had a good debut as well, as the dance sequel pulled in about the same amount as it's predecessor - almost $20 million over three days, and good enough for second place.
In third place, "The Spiderwick Chronicles" was the weekend choice for families, spinning just over $19 million, which according to watchers was a decent amount given the movie was, "nearly indistinguishable from all the other recent fantasies."
The other new release, the romantic comedy "Definitely, Maybe" grabbed fifth place with almost $10 million. Nearing the $100 million mark, "Juno" has so far been the top earner for 2008, as it had another strong weekend finishing in seventh.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1. Jumper - $33.9 M
2. Step Up 2 the Streets - $19.7 M
3. The Spiderwick Chronicles - $19.1 M
4. Fool's Gold - $13.1 M
5. Definitely, Maybe - $9.8 M
6. Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins - $8.5 M
7. Juno - $4.6 M
8. The Bucket List - $4.1 M
9. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour - $3.3 M
10. 27 Dresses - $3.2 M
The filming style of Jumper made me feel like i myself was jumping around... very cool. Also Christensen's lines were as short as possible, which was ideal for the movie's overall quality.
