It was heartbreak at the box office this past weekend, with the lowest returns in over a decade for the same time period. With yet more weak new releases, "The Game Plan" held its position from last week, finishing in first place with over $16 million. "The Heartbreak Kid", Ben Stiller's new comedy from the Farrelly brothers (Something about Mary), suffered from what was perhaps a misguided marketing effort, and failed to inspire moviegoers to invest their hard earned dollars in what was a remake of the 1972 movie of the same name.
Actually, we just had a look at the movie poster for the 1972 version of "The Heartbreak Kid", and it looks like it picked up some awards that year - specifically, the N.Y. Film Critics 1972 award for Best Supporting Actress for Jeannie Berlin, and the National Society of Film Critics 1972 award for Best Supporting Actor to Eddie Albert and Best Supporting Actress for Jeannie Berlin. The 1972 version was directed by Elaine May, written by Neil Simon, and starred Charles Grodin and Cybill Shepherd.
But we digress...
In fifth place, "The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising" had what was one of the poorest openings for a fantasy on record, notching just $3.7 million in over 3,000 theatres, while the music drama "Feel the Noise" fared better at $3.2 million at just over a 1,000 sites - which Sony Pictures claimed was more than the movie's production budget.
"3:10 to Yuma" is the highest grossing movie of the fall, adding another $3.2 million for a total of over $48 million for the run so far.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1. The Game Plan - $16.6 M
2. The Heartbreak Kid - $14 M
3. The Kingdom - $9.7 M
4. Resident Evil: Extinction - $4.5 M
5. The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising - $3.7 M
6. Good Luck Chuck - $3.6 M
7. 3:10 to Yuma - $3.2 M
8. Feel the Noise - $3.2 M
9. Mr. Woodcock - $2.3 M
10. The Brave One - $2.3 M
