The zombies led the way this past weekend, as Milla Jovovich and "Resident Evil: Extinction" posted the top number at the box office. The third installment of the video game crossover had the highest grossing opening of the series, although it had slightly less ticket sales in its opening then the second picture, "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" in 2004.
In second place, the Dane Cook and Jessica Alba romantic comedy, "Good Luck Chuck" posted a respectable $14 million. The movie was most notable for the mild controversy that the movie poster generated, being a take-off of the famous Rolling Stone cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1981.
The David Cronenberg crime drama "Eastern Promises" had a wide release this weekend, posting almost $6 million - good enough for 5th place. The other new release to crack the top ten was "Sydney White" with just over $5 miilion, an Amanda Bynes vehicle that was only lightly promoted.
In limited release, the Sean Penn directed "Into the Wild" showed some strong numbers, averaging over $50,000 per location. The nature drama, based on a true story and starring Emile Hirsch will expand into the top 12 markets next weekend.
And finally, the Brad Pitt western with the long winded name "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" was given a limited release as well after being shelved for years. The filming on this began so long ago that Pitt was still with Jennifer Aniston at the time. Averaging around $28,000 per site, it's wide release is set for October 19, 2007.
