In what is typically a slow time for new movies, the trend continued last weekend, with holdover "Superbad" winning the top spot for the second week, while a handful of new releases failed to impress. Rowan Atkinson in "Mr. Bean's Holiday" actually did better than we predicted, pulling into 4th spot with just over $10 million, although it didn't sell as many tickets as the debut "Bean" back in 1997.
It was a below average start for Jet Li and Jason Statham, but "War" won the day for new releases in fifth place, beating up on Scarlett Johansson in "The Nanny Diaries", in sixth with almost $8 million.
"Resurrecting The Champ" failed to deliver a knockout, earning just $1.7 million at 1,605 venues and appearing on the chart way down at 15th place.
On a more positive note, "The Bourne Ultimatum" became the highest grossing picture of its series, and soon will become the only sequel of the summer to see greater attendance than its predecessor.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1. Superbad - $18 M
2. The Bourne Ultimatum - $12.4 M

4. Mr. Bean's Holiday - $10.1 M
5. WAR - $10 M

7. The Simpsons Movie - $4.4 M
8. Stardust - $3.9 M
