Three different genres debuted this past weekend, and none of them proved to be knock out hits. "Ocean's Thirteen" stole the top spot with just over $36 million, but failed to match the pull of the previous two movies in the franchise, "Ocean's Eleven" and "Ocean's Twelve". Audiences still responded to the star-laden heist flick, and it's laid back style exemplified by the banter of George Clooney and Brad Pitt, but it could be time for the series to hang up its gloves.
The family animated comedy from Sony about surfing penguins, "Surf's Up" crested in fourth place with over $17 million - which is on the low end for this type of movie according to analysts. Meanwhile, it looks like the shock has worn off, as "Hostel Part II", failed to surprise, showing up in sixth place.
At the bottom of the chart, a little housecleaning was done as "Gracie", "Bug", and "28 Weeks Later" were swept away.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1. Ocean's Thirteen - $36.1 M
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - $21.1 M
3. Knocked Up - $19.6 M
4. Surf's Up - $17.6 M
5. Shrek the Third - $15.3 M
6. Hostel Part IIs - $8.2 M
7. Mr. Brooks - $4.9 M
8. Spider-Man 3 - $4.3 M
9. Waitress - $1.6 M
10. Disturbia - $.5 M
