"Disturbia" retained the number one spot at the box office this past weekend, due to some lack lustre openings from the week's new releases. Overall, box office receipts were down around 18 percent compared to the same time frame last year. "Fracture" starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling broke into second place with just over $11 million, while "Vacancy" with Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale barely registered in fourth with $7.6 million.
Hot Fuzz" starring Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, and from the creators of "Shaun of the Dead" entered in sixth place, which was actually the strongest opening of the weekend, as it was a limited release in just 825 theatres. The only other new release in the top ten was "In the Land of Women" straggling into eighth place. Meanwhile "The Hoax" with Richard Gere went into wide release, but was essentially ignored by movie fans, posting just $1.3 million in ticket sales, which placed it in 16th place.
