The Turtles came out on top of a weekend that featured six new wide releases, with "TMNT" being the only bonafide hit of the bunch. Returning to the screen after 14 years in a computer animated version, the latest take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise pulled in just over $24 million at the box office. The first movie, a live action version back in 1990, opened at $25.4 million, which in today's dollars is the equivalent of about $40 million.
The Spartans. led by Gerard Butler, showed their gumption, holding in second place, as "300" took in almost $20 million in it's third weekend. "Shooter", with Mark+Wahlberg perhaps suffered with a not aggressive enough advertising campaign, opening in third place with $14.5 million. The opposite can be said for "The Last Mimzy" in 5th place with $10 million, which was a solid opening for a children's fantasy flick that didn't come with a built-in fan base. Adam Sandler also didn't fare well in "Reign Over Me", which opened in eight place.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1. TMNT - $24.3 M
2. 300 - $19.9 M
3. Shooter - $14.5 M
