Sacha Baron Cohen's creation from his HBO series "Da Ali G Show", blew away the opening competition over the weekend. "Borat" opened in just 837 theatres, yet racked up $26 million at the box office. In doing so, it managed to become the highest grossing wide release opening ever for a movie playing at less than 1,100 theatres. I guess that actually qualifies it as a blockbuster. Next week, the release will expand to 2,200 to 2,500 theatres, so expect the dollars to continue to flow.
The other new releases over the weeknd were the family pictures, "The Santa Clause 3" and "Flushed Away" with openings of $20 million and $19.1 million, respectively. "Flushed Away" had a stronger opening than the Aardman animation studio's last picture, Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, but was still below the average opening for a computer animated flick.
Last weekend's top movie, Saw III dropped to 4th place, and had a sharp drop off in revenue, with ticket sales down 54 percent over last weekend for an estimated $15.5 million.
The only other newcomer to the top ten, was "The Queen", which snuck into tenth place after being in 14th place last week, and in it's 6th week of release.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - $26.4 million
2) The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause - $20 million
3) Flushed Away - $19.1 million
4) Saw III - $15.5 million
5) The Departed - $8 million
6) The Prestige - $7.8 million
7) Flags of Our Fathers - $4.5 million
