Opening in Theatres, December 1, 2006

It looks like it will be a slow weekend at the box office, with only three new movies getting a wide release tomorrow - and none of them are blockbusters. First up is "The Nativity Story", which was the first film ever to get a premiere at the Vatican. In an ironic twist, the film's 16 year old star, Keisha Castle-Hughes, was unable to attend the premiere because she is pregnant. New Line is releasing the Christmas story in 2,800 theatres. "The Nativity Story" is getting lukewarm responses from the critics who pre-screened it. Director Catherine Hardwicke's breakout film was "Lords of Dogtown" in 2005.

Also up is the mystery thriller "Turistas" from Fox Atomic in 1,500 venues, and National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj opening in 1,979 theatres.

Next week at the box office should be smoking, however with Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto", Leonardo DiCaprio in "Blood Diamond", Jude Law in both "Breaking and Entering" and "The Holiday". and "Unaccompanied Minors".

Rocky Balboa Returns

And you thought that Sylvester Stallone had already milked all he could out of the popular "Rocky" series. Opening in theatres on December 20, 2006, The Italian Stallion returns after a 16 year hiatus in "Rocky Balboa". So come on now - how many other 60 year olds will stand in a ring and get the crap beat out of them?

And if that's not enough, look for the return of John Rambo in 2007. Stay tuned...

Movie Box Office: November 24 - 26, 2006

The Thanksgiving weekend box office was dominated by last weekend's top 2, with both "Happy Feet" and "Casino Royale" holding strong in their second week.  The only new movie that seemed to strike a chord with audiences this weekend, was Denzel Washington's "Deja Vu", which pulled in third spot with over $20 million in ticket sales.

Although "Deck the Halls" with Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito snagged fourth place, it was with a non earth shattering amount of around $12 miilion. "The Fountain" failed to impress, sneaking into tenth place, while Jack Black's "Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny" floundered in 11th place with just over $3 million.

Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:

1) Happy Feet - $37.9 million

2) Casino Royale - $31 million

3) Deja Vu - $20.8 million

4) Deck the Halls - $12 million

5) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - $10.4 million

6) The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause - $10 million

7) Stranger Than Fiction - $6 million

8) Flushed Away - $5.8 million

9) Bobby - $4.9 million

10) The Fountain - $3.7 million

Bug Posters

We just like this one because it's a creepy poster. "Bug" is directed by Academy Award winning director, William Friedkin ("The Exorcist", "The French Connection"). It's a psychological thriller about a lonely waitress with a tragic past, that blurs the lines between paranoia and nightmarish reality - nothing is quite what it appears to be. The release from Lionsgate is TBA next year in 2007.

We like one of Friedkin's quotes: "I consider myself just another member of the crew - the highest paid member of the crew."

Movie Box Office: November 17 - 19, 2006

The dancing penguins managed to just edge out the new blonde Bond, as "Happy Feet" waltzed into first place at the box office with over $41 million in box office receipts, compared to "Casino Royale" with just under $41 million.  It was a battle all weekend as to which film would claim the number one spot, and although the combined box office total were decent enough, overall ticket sales were down 18 percent as compared to the same time frame last year when Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire sizzled with over $102 million.

The only other new release cracking the top ten, were Freestyle Releasing's special After Dark Horrorfest, which was a weekend event in which they screened 9 new horror films at 500 theatres in the U.S.

We Are Marshall Posters

Opening December 22, 2006 from Warner Brothers Pictures, this drama is based on the true story of college football at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.  On a fateful night in 1970, 75 members of the football team and coaching staff were killed in a plane crash.  This story follows the efforts of a young coach named Jack Lengyel to rebuild the football program, and in the process help the grieving families and community to heal.

"We are Marshall" is directed by McG (Charlies Angels and Charlies Angels: Full Throttle) and stars Matthew McConaughey.

After Dark Horrorfest

Starting tomorrow, November 17th, 2006 and running until Sunday, November 19th, After Dark Films will be releasing 8 new horror films in 500 theatres in 35 cities in the United States.

They are calling the weekend, "The After Dark Horrorfest", and it includes the films, "Unrest", "Penny Dreadful", "The Gravedancers", "The Hamiltons", "Reincarnation - Rinne" (from the director of "The Grudge" and "The Grudge 2"), "Dark Ride", "The Abandoned", "Wicked Little Things", and "Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror".  Hey, that's 9 films - maybe they're not counting Snoop Dog as a horror flick...
