Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's
Chest was unrelenting in it's dominance of the summer box office, racking up yet another record - over $300 million in
just 16 days, surpassing the previous record holder, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the
Sith. Pirates also became the first summer movie since Signs in 2002 to spend three weeks
at No. 1. Which brings us to M. Night Shyamalan's disappointing debut of Lady in the Water, which pulled in just
over $18 million - his lowest since his breakthrough movie, The Sixth Sense. Many feel that it
was a viewer backlash over his last flick, The Village which failed to live up
to his earlier promise.
In contrast, Monster House had a
relatively strong opening during a season when there seems to be a glut of CGI films being pumped out. Uma flopped out in My Super Ex-Girlfriend, but we
still love her anyway. And Kevin Smith managed to sneak into the top ten, with his quirky and eclectic (to put it mildly)
humour in Clerks 2.
