Movie Box Office: September 14 – 16, 2007
In another slow weekend at the box office, the new releases managed only meagre earnings, with Jodie Foster and "The Brave One" taking the top spot with $13.5 million, while Billy Bob Thornton had a lukewarm reception with the comedy "Mr. Woodcock" debuting in third place with $8.8 million. The only other new release in the top ten was the Korean monster movie "Dragon Wars".
It was actually a trio of summer releases that held up the best this weekend, with "Superbad", "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Rush Hour 3" beneftiting from the lack of compelling new releases.
Meanwhile, a couple of movies that should show some promise when they open in wider releases next weekend were the musical "Across the Universe" and David Cronenberg's crime thriller, "Easter Promises" which stars Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. Both movies pulled some good numbers from their limited release openings.
Last weekend's full top 10 was as follows:
1. The Brave One - $13.5 M
2. 3:10 to Yuma - $8.9 M
3. Mr. Woodcock - $8.8 M
4. Superbad - $5.1 M
5. Dragon Wars - $5 M
6. Halloween (2007) - $4.9 M
7. The Bourne Ultimatum - $4.1 M
8. Balls of Fury - $3.3 M
9. Rush Hour 3 - $3.3 M
10. Mr. Bean's Holiday - $2.7 M
